Solterra Spotlight: Meet Kurt Chhay
Welcome to Solterra’s employee spotlight, where once a month we will interview a member of the amazing Solterra team! This week on the blog, we are highlighting an integral team member who knows the solar industry in and out and always keeps us laughing.
Kurt Chhay was born in Cambodia and came to Seattle in 1981. Before joining the solar industry, he worked as a car mechanic. While he still enjoys working on cars, Kurt is happy to have made the switch to solar.
I sat down with Kurt to learn a little bit more about his role at Solterra.
Q: What made you want to work in the solar industry?
A: I’ve always been interested in solar panels, batteries, and electrical vehicles since I was a kid. I used to work on cars and then a buddy of mine worked in solar, so he hooked me up with this job.
Q: How long have you worked for Solterra?
A: I’ve been here for 6 years now. I started out as an installer, and eventually got my 02 [Journeyman Electrician] license. Before that, probably about 3 months into being an installer, I became the field technician. That’s the person that does the roof measurements and checks out everyone’s electrical system before installation, so I moved up the ranks pretty quickly.
Q: What do you do at Solterra now?
A: I’m still the field technician. I set the teams up for success. Basically, I get an idea of what each system needs beforehand. I go to each client’s house beforehand and check out the roof, check out their electrical system, and get everything ready to go so that when the installers are ready to start, everything goes as smoothly as possible.
Q: What’s your favorite part about your job?
A: Meeting all of the people who are going to get solar!
Q: What makes you proud to work in the solar industry?
A: I’m working in an industry that matters in the world and making a difference.
Q: Now for some fun ones. What do you do in your free time outside of work?
A: Road trips in my Tesla, as many as I can get. Typically I like to go on long winding mountain roads in search of hidden casinos.
Q: Dream vacation?
A: Probably to go back to Cambodia, where I’m originally from.
Q: What’s your favorite food and why?
A: Anything but vegetables. I think I’m allergic to vegetables!
Kurt makes every effort to ensure that each client has a great experience with Solterra from start to finish. We appreciate the dedication that he has to our industry, improving the client experience, and to doing his job with a smile on his face!
