Incentives just got better for Washington homeowners with backup battery systems. Starting in 2026, Puget Sound Energy will accept Enphase and Franklin batteries in their flex program, meaning more potential savings for residential customers.

PSE Flex Battery Program explained

Our region’s energy needs are growing, which puts stress on the electrical grid. The Puget Sound Energy Flex Program helps protect Washington’s power grid during periods of high demand, or “Flex Events.” During these times, customers can participate in reducing energy usage—and earn rewards—in several ways, including allowing PSE to utilize their backup battery storage.

How does the PSE Flex Battery Program work?

During a Flex Event, PSE may call upon your batteries. You will be notified of a Flex Event ahead of time and the battery response will be automatic, requiring no additional action from you. Your battery system will never be discharged less than 20%, meaning PSE will not utilize your batteries when they are less than 20% charged.

Flex events will only occur once a day during the hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., typically lasting between 2-4 hours each, and will never take place on the following holidays: New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. These events can occur no more than 3 times per week and 15 times per season in winter (Nov. 1 to March 31) and summer (May 1 to Sept. 30).

In addition to ensuring stable and reliable energy for your community, your participation reduces PSE’s dependence on alternate solutions such as short-term, carbon-intensive generators, helping Washington transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy resources.

How does the PSE Flex Program benefit me and my community?

Earn money for helping smooth out spikes in your community’s energy consumption:

  • After enrolling in Flex Batteries, you’ll receive a one-time incentive check for up to $1,000 (per battery). This incentive is calculated at $75/kWh, capped at $1,000. For example, if you have a 10 kWh battery (like the Enphase 10C), you’ll receive a check for $750.
  • Additionally, you can earn up to $500 (also per battery) annually for each year you remain enrolled via an e-gift card with the option to redeem at a wide variety of retailers.
  • You’ll also be entered to win a $250 gift card upon enrolling.

Power good for the planet and your neighborhood:

  • Help the environment: When paired with solar, batteries can help further reduce your environmental impact.
  • Support your community’s energy stability: Batteries can help take strain off the energy grid during high-energy use periods and create a more stable energy system.

Receive enhanced incentives if eligible, like:

  •  Up to $10,000 towards the upfront cost of your battery if you qualify for reasons including limited income, lack of access to food and health care, the language you speak, disability, or other factors.
  • Up to $5,000 toward qualifying equipment and installation costs for residential electric customers experiencing reliability issues in a specific area of PSE’s grid.
